This past weekend, the Oasis Foundation, a Seattle-based nonprofit supporting the Turkmen minority community, hosted an unforgettable potluck picnic at Lake Sammamish State Park. Nearly 200 people gathered to celebrate culture, connection, and community in one of Seattle’s most beloved outdoor spaces.
Families and friends arrived with delicious homemade dishes, including classic tantuni, vibrant salads, traditional desserts, and crowd-favorite hotdogs. The event beautifully blended Central Asian flavors with local picnic culture, making it a standout moment for anyone seeking cultural events near Seattle.
As a minority community, the Turkmen-American families behind Oasis Foundation are working to preserve heritage while building bridges in their new home. Events like this strengthen cultural identity, promote inclusion, and offer a welcoming space for all generations.
The children enjoyed fun games and lighthearted competitions, while adults played friendly but competitive volleyball matches, shared stories, and reconnected. The event highlighted the importance of family-friendly nonprofit gatherings in Washington State, where minority voices are empowered and celebrated.

A standout moment of the day came from Azad Sesh, who delivered a heartfelt live musical performance. His voice captivated the crowd, bringing together people of all ages in a powerful moment of unity and joy. His performance reminded everyone how music brings communities closer, even across generations and languages.
Set against the serene backdrop of Lake Sammamish State Park, the picnic felt like a perfect blend of tradition, togetherness, and nature. From beach views to shaded picnic tables, it was the ideal location for building memories and strengthening community bonds.
